Web/Mobile App Critique

One of my favorite apps to use on my phone is the Youtube application. One of the biggest reasons I enjoy using Youtube is because its very helpful in watching reviews of people figuring things out like small home repairs and watching reviews on the latest technology that is out. Youtube is largest and most widely used video sharing service. Youtube has grown so much from its humble beginnings in 2005, created by three former PayPal employees and as of 2014 generated ad revenue of approximately $1 billion (Vahid & Lysecky, 2017, Chapter 6).

The usability of the Youtube app is pretty easy for the most part. For instance when one goes into the application they are greeted by the videos that they would most likely watch, followed by the search bar at the very top, also in between the search bar and the videos you will find keywords of items that one has previously searched for that act as quick searches to filter videos that interest you the most related to that specific keyword. For example I enjoy watching a lot of tech vlogs that talk about the latest and greatest mobile devices that launch, so the keyword that is on my Youtube app is called “gadget” and clicking on that keyword will immediately take me to videos solely about tech gadgets.

The design of the Youtube app is very streamlined and modern looking. Once the mobile application is opened the user is greeted by various videos and clips that might interest the user, the bottom portion of the app has the users video subscriptions, library of any saved videos and explore option in which the user can access vides pertaining to many categories such as music and what is trending.

A few recommendations for Youtube that I would make would be the added communication feature of video chatting. Right now in the midst of the pandemic its forcing adults and kids in school to become remote and adding the chat functionality for video chatting in YouTube will help enhance the platform by adding extra functionality. Another recommendation for the Youtube app is to have stricter policies in place for age appropriate video. For instance when searching for videos pertaining to exercises some of the videos that pop-up could be deemed inappropriate to view for anyone under the age of 18. If Youtube had a tighter control in age appropriate content it can be more reliable for younger kids to use without parents worrying about them using the application. Lastly another recommendation for Youtube that I would want to see is the easier ability to download or purchase videos. For instance there are some for videos where you are unable to download and keep, for example there are some music videos that have that option disabled.
