Computers in the Workplace
Information systems will continue to evolve in the next decade. As
mentioned by Vahid & Lysecky (2017), “is a collection of hardware,
software, and networks that people use to create, store, organize, and
distribute information" (Chapter 9). I currently work for the
telecommunications industry, and we heavily use computers in our daily work
life. From PCs to iPads and other mobile devices, technology is the core of our
business in how we make sure our customers, and employees included stay
connected with their loved ones through the sales and offering of mobile
network solutions. I personally use my work laptop every day to check emails
from my boss and to stay updated on any new promotion that we are launching,
also we do weekly zoom calls for our district to make sure we stay connected
and current with district sales objectives, operations and company-wide
expectations. With our iPads our frontline team uses them to execute
transactions and to look up customers account securely and efficiently. The
iPads are also used as terminals to take mobile payments as well.
While I have worked for my current company for almost a decade, I can
attest to how the evolution of technology has impacted our business. Initially
we had workstations with desktops that felt like we were anchored to that
station for most of the day since that was our primary tool used to assist
customers. As years went by and mobile technology began to grow past the
traditional cell phone and lead to tablets and IoT devices we began to evolve
our interaction model to reflect with new technology that was launching. We
wanted to shift our focus from using tethered workstations to using iPads so
that we were mobile for the customer and were able to assist them anywhere in
the store, facilitating better communication and enhance in-store experience.
In the next decade I feel like
technology will continue to evolve and become more mobile. This pandemic has
taught me that working remote might be utilized more in the future. Even though
consumers still prefer visiting stores or coming in for face-to-face
communication I feel like that will become more minimized as technology
advances.
